Range Life and the Great American Indie Film Tour.

Text: Kee Chang

In May 2008, Time Warner announced their plan to pull the plug on Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures in a measure to cut costs. Such grim developments inevitably breed serious doubts and anxieties about the future of independent film distribution, but Todd Sklar’s Range Life Entertainment is striking back with a bold initiative: a cross-country indie film tour! The company’s distribution model utilized social networking tools and grassroots campaigning to reach core audiences for each of the four films in tow, including Sklar’s own Box Elder. Sklar plans to add four additional filmmakers, three comedians, and two bands to the Spring 2009 tour, which is scheduled to hit forty-five colleges in the Midwest and the East Coast. Range Life Entertainment’s proactive search for a sustainable distribution model may very well prove to be the shining beacon of light that independent filmmakers are looking for.
