Bill Watterson Speaks

Text: Nik Mercer

One of the greatest comic strip authors of all time (the greatest next to Schultz?), Bill Watterson, has finally come out of the woodwork and granted an interview with my hometown newspaper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer. (It's been 21 years since he last chatted with a journalist.) Perhaps in an effort to not "pull a Salinger," the exceptionally reclusive author of Calvin and Hobbes, a daily staple for most kids from 1985 to 1995, fielded six questions.

Now, don't get excited―Watterson didn't announce the relaunch of the dynamic duo or anything. But for those of you that are still bereft and looking for closure, this Q&A will make you smile. "By the end of 10 years, I'd said pretty much everything I had come there to say," the legend reminded us, adding in, "I've never regretted stopping when I did."Also, know well that Watterson's humor is still alive and kicking:

How soon after the U.S. Postal Service issues the Calvin stamp will you send a letter with one on the envelope?

Immediately. I'm going to get in my horse and buggy and snail-mail a check for my newspaper subscription.

How do you want people to remember that 6-year-old and his tiger?

I vote for "Calvin and Hobbes, Eighth Wonder of the World."
