Art Smart

Photographers: Alex Kish

Most of us have come to realize that the beach is a relatively relaxing place if we can ignore the lack of parking, overwhelming crowds and rising cost of fuel to get there in the first place! But when Israel and Danielle Paskowitz’s son Isaiah was diagnosed with autism at age 3, it became on the only place to calm his disorder through the act of surfing.

To help raise funds for Surfers Healing Autism, an organization founded by Isaiah’s parents, as well as the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, Quiksilver’s siteLA will host The Environmentally Stupid this Saturday from 8-11 p.m. The free exhibition will feature art on surfboards, guitars and old doors by Dana Louise Kirkpatrick as well as photography from Steven Lippman, Michael Muller and David Scharff. Also, a sneak preview of Pat R. Notaros III's documentary, A Walk on Water: Mercury, Autism and the Environment” will run with a short film on the organizations by Alejandro DeMetrius.

You can not only purchase the display art to raise funds for the organizations, but also enjoy a musical performance from co-founder of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, Keith Barry and his student ensemble, or glance at the drawings of Isaiah Paskowitz. The event is also designed to make you more conscious of the environmental crisis. Education never cost so little.

So if the thought of commuting to the ocean still majorly turns you off, stop by the exhibit to help support charity and vicariously live out a beach adventure in an artistic ambience. Killing two birds with one stone never felt better.
