A Brief History of the Album's Decline In Value

Text: Nik Mercer

While Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III hit the one-million mark in one week, the first album to do so since 50 Cent's 2005 LP, The Massacre, record sales are obviously in a perpetual state of decline. So much so that Amazon.com is offering Coldplay's back catalog for $1.99! (That's right, you can now shell out a more appropriate fee for X & Y.)

In response to this bizarre tactic, the Los Angeles Times briefly looked at the decline in value of the record since 2000. While such a report is nothing new to us, it's quaint to read that Best Buy deserved coverage for selling the Dixie Chicks' Home for a mere $9.99 in 2002. To highlight the CD's rapid decline in value, the article points out that, in 2004, "Target sold Nirvana's box set, With the Lights Out, for $27.98, more than $10 below the wholesale cost. The set, according to Billboard, came with a $59.98 list." Ouch. It all makes sense now...
