Urban Guerrilla Gardening in Tokyo

Text: Nik Mercer

Guerrilla gardening in densely-populated cities seems to be a hip new way to fight urbanization and sprawling growth. It's prettier than getting a bunch of hippies together to sit in a tree, protesting its removal, anyway.

Guerrilla gardening efforts have occurred all around the world (check GuerrillaGardening.org for proof and more information), but we've never seen such a project sprout in Tokyo... until now.

Kirai (one hell of an amazing English-language blog from Japan) recently reported on a certain guerrilla gardener in the massive metropolis, and while the sight is nothing new, per se, the dichotomy and symbolism (tiny woman vs. gigantic industrial mass) is pretty spectacular in its own right. Get the full Kirai scoop.
