New Information 12", Fontän's "Early Morning"

Text: Nik Mercer

Sweden's dubbed-out, epic space-disco outfit, Studio, is well known for having its own record label, Information. Until now, though, the small indie has solely released Studio material (Yearbook 1, Yearbook 2, West Side). This trend will change on July 28 with the release of fellow Swedish compatriots Fontän's "Early Morning" 12". The single will feature the original cut of the song as well as two remixes by Studio and Mountain of One.

"Early Morning" is sharper and speedier than anything Studio's put out, but it's no less soothing and mystical. Synth melodies, gritty guitar riffs, and filtered vocals swirl throughout the shortish (5:38) pop tune, culminating into something that is all at once foot-tappingly jammy and fluidly subdued. A world of contradictions.

Studio and Mountain of One's versions are both longer and a little bit more expected: each remix brings the bpm down to a significantly slower rate and accentuates the subtler intricacies of the track. We're loving Fontän because of the pair's keen ability to bring together utterly chill slow-jams and more structured pop arrangements. But what would you expect from a group that idolizes Swedish prog-rockers Nationalteatern and has worked with a vast array of genre-nonspecific artists including Stonefunkers, Silverbullit, Jens Lekman, Uran, El Perro Del Mar, Lykke Li, Studio, Levity Ball, Kenny Håkansson (Kebnekajse), Ensamble Doluri, and Niefelheim?

Check out the lead song in the media player to the right and pre-order the vinyl.
